Thotalagala — Timeless Tea Country Heritage

Thotalagala

A restored colonial masterpiece in Sri Lanka’s legendary tea country.

Walking in the Footsteps of Sir Thomas Lipton

Thotalagala is a remarkable feat of restoration — a planter’s bungalow revived to its former glory, featuring seven themed suites inspired by the personalities who shaped the history of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, one of the world’s most celebrated tea-growing regions.

Located in Haputale, Thotalagala sits perfectly between Sri Lanka’s misty highlands and the wildlife-rich plains leading to Yala and Udawalawe. Kandy lies within easy reach, making this an ideal base to experience the very best of Sri Lanka’s tea country.

Steeped in history, the bungalow stands on the Pitaratmalie Estate, part of Agarapatana Plantations — encompassing nearly 8,000 hectares of the finest high-grown Ceylon tea. Neighboring Dambatenne Estate, planted by Sir Thomas Lipton himself, is where the term “Ceylon Tea” was born. Guests enjoy exclusive access to Lipton’s original residence and tea factory.

Surrounded by 20 acres of lawn and patana grass, the bungalow opens to sweeping vistas of rolling hills and endless tea gardens stretching toward Lipton’s Seat. From teak-panelled smoking rooms to grand plantation dining, Thotalagala offers an immersive colonial luxury experience — inviting guests to step back in time and live the traditions of a working tea estate.
